Product Description
Spanning four decades, Sharkman of Cortez takes the reader through the adventures and perils of Captain Bill, a man determined to make his living from the sea. His tale begins in 1967 when he runs away from the frigid North to a picnic table on the white sandy beach of Siesta Key, Florida. Through the lazy 1960s hippie haze, he gets his first job on a crab boat and begins what he believes will be a life of fulfilling all his dreams. He encounters colorful local characters along the way, while carving out a living and pioneering some of the most innovative ways to capture, view, document, photograph, and sell sharks, dead or alive.

| Customer Reviews: "Sharkman of Cortez" hooked me with the prologue! August 5, 2010 Arthur W. Dover (Venice FL) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is an amazing story that almost didn't get told. When writer Marisa Mangani went scouting Florida Gulf Coast hangouts looking for local characters to write about, she hit the jackpot! It was chance -- or perhaps destiny -- when she found herself sitting at a bar in Cortez with Captain Bill Goldschmitt, known as the Sharkman of Cortez, who was looking for someone to help write his book about sharks. Mangani not only wrote his book -- she married him!
"Sharkman of Cortez" is a collaboration of Goldschmitt's meticulous notes, detailed memories, delightful drawings and amazing color photographs of his 40-year career as an adventurous shark hunter incorporated by Mangani into a poignant, funny and sometimes terrifyng story of a boy's journey into manhood. This history of the coastal communities from Siesta Key to Anna Maria Island and Cortez is filled with the colorful characters Goldschmitt knew along the way, and relates the demise of the fishing industry in the Gulf waters. Mangani's genius for descriptive writing makes the people, places and sharks come alive. The photographs -- 32 1/2 pages of them! -- are a bonus.
Goldschmitt definitely has an agenda you can agree with or not, but it's a fascinating, entertaining and informative look at a culture that has all but disappeared from the Florida coast.
I am looking forward to more books from Marisa Mangani.

A Real Life Story that couldn't be made up. Much more than a Shark Book August 5, 2010 WorldTraveler 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this shark book, and the first time I opened it, I read half of it tell the wee hours of the morning. Whether or not you agree with the author's opinions of these large animals; this is a biography of a man's life that is so unique, it reads like a fiction and had me intrigued throughout the entire book. Real-life accounts make the best reading and you can tell every word and every sentence in this book had so much passion behind them that they could only have been written by events that shaped this authors life. I recommend this shark book to all who want to hear a true / real story.
My husband will have to wait. August 5, 2010 Carolyna D. (Massachusetts) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got this book thinking my husband would like it, but after reading the first few pages I decided he's not getting it till I'm done. I can't put it down, it's so well written that I feel like I'm there experiencing the hot Florida breeze while watching this boy become man as he finds his way to manhood with his passion for sharks. Great writing Marissa! Carolyn D
Must Read! August 31, 2010 Patty's Write 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've loved shark stories since my Grandmother took me to see Jaws back in the 70's! I couldn't put this book down, and have already re-read it once!
This shark book is much more than just an exciting shark story, it is the unforgettable tale of a lost teenaged boy becoming a man and finally finding love.
The shark scenes are described so well you feel as if you're on the boat, fighting alongside the Sharkman with the Florida sun beating on you while your heart pounds with adrenalin! The vast array of pictures scattered throughout the book proves this is no fictional tale created in someone's imagination, but a true, life-long adventure!
Agree or disagree with his methods or his beliefs, Captain Bill, THE Sharkman, does things in his own way and by his own rules, always.
